REMERTON, GA (WALB) -  A south Georgia restaurant remains closed after fire ripped through the building.

Around three o'clock Tuesday morning, the Zaxby's on Baytree Road in Remerton caught fire.

Most of the rear of the building was destroyed. Remerton firefighters battled the smoke and flames.

They called for assistance from Lowdes County and Valdosta firefighters. Firefighters believe it started in the kitchen. Firefighters went inside and the ceiling collapsed.

"When we sent a crew inside and did an interior attack," said Remerton Fire Chief Ron Woods. "The ceiling started falling in so we had to draw back out for the personnel safety and so we got back out we kept attacking the fire we got aggressive as we could once we got conditions safe enough. We made entry through the front of building and started there and fought back to the fire."

The Lowndes County fire marshall is investigating what caused the fire.
