AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - By now, you've heard that this is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And a number of groups are doing fundraisers to benefit important research into finding a cure. Jay Polk traveled to Americus to tell us about one fundraiser that was a bit different.
The Kappa Sigma fraternity brothers at Georgia Southwestern University are losing a lot of hair on Thursday.
But it's not because of an upcoming exam or some initiation ceremony.
For a lot of people, getting their hair cut is something that they do because they want to. But for these guys, getting their hair cut is something they're doing to help a life saving cause.
Tripp Bridges, a Kappa Sigma brother at GSWU said, "Sometimes when people have breast cancer they have to go through chemotherapy. And it's a really embarrassing thing, especially for women, because they lose their hair. Just kind of shaving our heads to show our support."
And these brothers were looking to raise some serious money for the cause.
"We're shooting for $2,000," said Bridges.
And they were even able to double their goal, raising more than $4000 for the American Cancer Society. All of that money will go for cancer research and treatment.
Treatments that have helped a former brother in their fraternity after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2006. L. C. MacQuirter of Americus went through radiation treatments in Thomasville and the results were positive.
"According to Dr. Johnson, when I went to take this treatment I had 9.3. And when they finished it I had 0.3. So I was a survivor," said MacQuirter.
And that's the best news of all.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, in 2004 almost 187,000 women and more than 1,800 men were diagnosed with cancer. Breast cancer is the sixth most common cause of death for women in the United States.
