Originally from Brunswick, Ruthie started her career at WALB-TV in January of 1983, as host and producer of Town & Country, now called Newscenter 10's 12 o'clock news.
Ruthie is a graduate of Coastal Community College with a degree in Music Education/Performance and a minor in Communications. She later attended Georgia Southern University.
Ruthie travelled for two years around the country with singer/personality Anita Bryant, and now also spends time traveling the country performing in churches, at conventions and special command performances for the military.
She has been a past participant and winner in the Miss Georgia Scholarship Program and a former Peach Bowl Princess. Ruthie has been on stage and performed with such personalities as Bob Hope, the late Minnie Pearl, Amy Grant Gil, and has been a featured performer at Opryland USA and Disney World.
Ruthie is married to Dr. Michael J. Garner, Optometrist and they have one son, Stephen. Ruthie and her family are members of Albany's Sherwood Baptist Church where they are involved in the Music Ministry and Outreach Programs. Ruthie has served on the local boards of the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, the March of Dimes and is the host and chairperson for the Children's Miracle Network Celebration.
