Lee County -- Georgians with concealed weapon permits can now take guns into more public places. Governor Sonny Perdue signed the legislation Wednesday despite some opposition.
Under the new law, people with permits can take guns into restaurants, on public transportation, and in parks. Several groups were against the legislation, including the Georgia Restaurant Association, MARTA, and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, saying it could lead to increased violence.
Supporters say the new law is easier to understand and to obey. Philip Colson said "that allows you to take your family out to a good restaurant, and still carry your personal protection with you, that you need in this city."
The new law only applies to the 300,000 Georgians with concealed weapons permits and visitors with weapon permits from 16 other states that Georgia recognizes. There are approximately 35,000 permit holders in Dougherty County.
