Deputies deep-six fake goods

December 6, 2007

Albany -- That designer shirt or handbag you bought as a Christmas gift might be a fake. Dougherty County Sheriff's Investigators seized hundreds of thousands of dollars of counterfeit goods on Thursday.

Check out some of the thousands of jeans, shirts, jackets, shoes, hats, and other items seized during raids this week.

Investigators confiscated counterfeit products at Taniyah's Men's and Women's Fashions on South Slappey, Five Avenue Fashions in the Albany Mall, T&T Fashions on West Broad, and the D&D Mini Mall and Perfume Outlet on East Oglethorpe.

Investigators say counterfeit goods like these produce billions of dollars for international crime syndicates.

"We have had briefings from Homeland Defense and Customs Officials telling us this stuff is tracked back to different terrorist and crime organizations, who actually make the money off of it," said Dougherty Co. Sheriff's Captain Craig Dodd.

This is the third time in four years that D&D Mini Mart has been caught with counterfeit goods. The owner could face felony charges. The other stores are all first time offenders.

Sheriff's Investigators say if you have bought phony goods at the stores, You should ask for a refund.
