Was police chase necessary?

June 28, 2007

Lee County - The Albany Police Officer who chased a drug suspect until a deadly crash, is an eight year veteran of the force.

Cpl. Gary Price previously worked in APD's Uniform Division, but was most recently assigned to the Albany Dougherty Drug Unit.

Price, who was APD's Officer of the Year in 2003, was driving a marked car when he started chasing a suspected drug dealer on North Jefferson Street around 8:45 Wednesday night.

Price continued the chase out of Albany and into Lee County where North Jefferson Street turns into Old Leesburg Road.  The chase, which exceeded 100 miles per hour, continued on the narrow, curvy road until the suspect slammed head-on into Billy Klewitz' car.

Klewitz and the drug suspect were killed.
