Drought/fires won't stop 4th of July Festivities

June 19, 2007

Valdsota - South Georgia's severe drought and massive wildfires will not cancel Lowndes County's fourth of July festivities.

The Valdosta fire department says the shows should go on.

Fireworks will be seen in the Valdosta skies but with most vegetation still tinder dry, multiple agencies will be working to assure those fireworks don't spark a fire.  "This year, with people that we have here, we'll probably be using the county if we need them to put some people on the trees lines and that sort of thing," says Valdosta Fire Marshall James Williams.

Firefighters say anyone planning to use smaller fireworks and sparklers need to use extreme caution and monitor all firework activity to keep from sparking a blaze.
