Albany -- Albany veterinarians say they are seeing many pet owners worried about their animals that have been eating recalled pet food.
Garfield was brought in by it's owner for a kidney examination, because his regular food was one of the recalled brands.
The recall covers dog food sold under 51 brands, and 40 brands of cat food made by Menu Foods, and has been linked to animal deaths since February.
Dr. Ira Roth said it is a good idea to have your pet checked if you suspect they are having kidney problems. Roth said "the primary thing to watch for is a sudden increase in water consumption, which would indicate maybe damage to the kidneys. If you dog or cat quits eating suddenly, which is another sign of kidney damage."
The F.D.A. says their investigation of the recalled food is focusing on wheat gluten as the likely source of contamination in the wet style food.
Roth says Garfield showed signs of kidney problems that a five year old cat should not have yet, and will prescribe a treatment.
