Albany - - More than 40 % of people in some Southwest Georgia Counties are illiterate. An Albany family center is trying to change that.
Even Start provides academic assistance and parenting skills to families in the area.
Recently, it almost lost state money that keeps it going. Leaders were able to prove the need for their services in Albany, and now Even Start will have $180,000 to continue its mission.
But even that is less than what they're used to and the group is asking the community for help.
"We're looking at from last year about a 42 thousand dollar decrease and we don't want to have to decrease services. What were doing is good we need to be able to increase our services instead of decreasing," says Program Coordinator Sandy Bamford.
The program helps parents get their G.E.D.'s and teaches them ways to build stronger families.
It also provides tutoring for children.
