Coffee County Commissioners discuss Sheriff

March 15, 2006

Coffee County -  Coffee County Commissioners met this morning to talk about a severance package for the sheriff.

Sheriff Rob Smith is under investigation and, we're told, has agreed to resign.

Three Superior Court Judges in the Waycross Judicial Circuit which includes Coffee County issued a gag order to prevent county commissioners, the county attorney, or anyone else connected with the investigation from commenting.

Sources tell WALB News 10 the Sheriff is accused of not delivering subpoenas to witnesses, not serving arrest warrants, allowing inmates to come and go on passes, and even telling potential jurors they didn't need to show up for court.

The Sheriff is in the hospital with pneumonia. A spokesperson with the Governor's office told us they expected to get a resignation letter from Sheriff Smith, but that has not happened.
