Operation Home Delivery kicks off on NBC's "Today" Show

September 26, 2005

Americus - You can watch Habitat for Humanity build dozens of homes for hurricane victims on NBC's Today Show. To kick off Operation Home Delivery, Habitat volunteers will build at least 100 homes.

The first phase of the massive project is called "Houses in a Box." Volunteers will build the homes in New York's Rockefeller Plaza which will be renamed "Humanity Plaza" for the week.

"The frames of the houses will be constructed by volunteers in New York," said Duane Bates. "Then the houses will be broken down, put in trucks and shipped down to the area for families."

The houses will then be reassembled in Mississippi and Louisiana to house Katrina victims. Hammers will also be swinging in Los Angeles and Jackson, Mississippi. You can watch the volunteers and NBC build each morning next week on the Today Show.

The Americus chapter of Habitat for Humanity, New Horizons, is also renovating three homes for hurricane evacuees. The empty habitat homes are in Americus and Plains.

The first family, from Gulfport, Mississippi, will move in Wednesday.

"This is just a great way to get people a place to stay, help them out and also to reach out to people who may not be able to do what they need to do for themselves," said Mary Anne Crowley, New Horizons Executive Director.

More than 400 evacuee families are staying in the Americus area.
