Colquitt County - One South Georgia crop is nearly wiped out by waves of stormy weather.
More than 15 inches of rain dropped by recent hurricanes has brought diseases that have nearly wiped out the pepper crop in Colquitt County. Bacterial Leaf Spot, which causes the plants' leaves to fall off, and Anthracnose, which causes the pepper to the pods to rot, have attacked this year's crop.
"In bell peppers, it's gonna be almost a disastrous situation in that we may be looking at 80 - 90 percent loss of production we normally would have had this time of year," said Glenn Beard, Colquitt County Extension Agent.
Farmers continue to apply fungicides and are hoping for some warm, dry weather, so they can harvest what is left.
