THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) – A Thomas County man charged with fatally shooting his nephew was sentenced Tuesday in court.

73-year old Byron Griner pleaded guilty but mentally ill last month to a charge of voluntary manslaughter. A judge sentenced him to 10 years in prison.

He shot 39-year old John Mark Morris behind his home on Stewart Road last April.

Griner claimed Morris shot at him first, but investigators later disproved that theory.
