Dougherty County agents check underage alcohol sales

26-percent of Dougherty County stores checked by undercover agents in a compliance operation last month sold alcohol to the underage buyers.

Many of the clerks checked the undercover agents I-D's which showed they were not 21 and sold them alcohol anyway.

The Albany Dougherty Drug Unit checked 42 stores in two nights.  11 made illegal sales.  7 of those 11 checked I-D's.

Drug agents conducted the compliance check during spring break after getting complaints about stores selling to people under 21.

A.D.D.U. Commander Major Bill Berry said "The good part of this is that three-fourths of them checked us and refused to sell. We applaud that. And that's the good news of all that. And we are going to continue to be doing them."

Agents poured the alcohol they purchased down the drain.

The store clerks who sold the alcohol to the underage agents will be allowed to turn themselves in at the jail, where they will be charged with a misdemeanor.
