Donalsonville - A lightning strike sparked a fire that burned half a city block in downtown Donalsonville early Tuesday.

Eight businesses were damaged by the raging fire.

Two beauty shops, an insurance agency, a pool hall, a gift shop, and a gym are among the businesses damaged in the early morning fire.

Firefighters battled the huge flames and worked for hours to protect other nearby buildings.

The fire consumed the businesses on the east side of Cherry Street in downtown Donalsonville.

Investigators say lightning struck a building as strong storms moved through Donalsonville.
