THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) - Thomas County is getting ready to auction off properties that have delinquent taxes. Owners who don't pay their 2009 property taxes by next Tuesday could lose their property.

As of Tuesday, taxes on 95 properties were still unpaid, but officials expect that number to drop significantly over the next week. Captain Steve Jones leads the effort to collect delinquent taxes.

The Thomas County Sheriff's Office took over that responsibility in 2009 and is one of two sheriffs offices in Georgia to handle that work. "We understand where people are and that's why we're two years out trying to collect the 2009 taxes. We've been trying to give people as long as possible to get these taxes in, but unfortunately there comes a point where you've got to collect," said Captain Steve Jones.

The taxes can only be paid in cash or cashiers check up until the morning of the auction. The auction will be held next Tuesday the 5th at the Downtown Judicial Center.
