ALBANY, GA (WALB) - An investigation is underway into the death of a 19-month-old Albany girl.
Janaysia Stevenson was taken to Phoebe Emergency room Monday afternoon by her mother, and the child was pronounced dead.
28-year-old Gregory Keith Evans, the boyfriend of the child's mother, has been charged with two counts of battery, one count of cruelty to a child. He was arrested Monday, and is in the Dougherty County jail.
Chaitia Stevenson, her mother has also been arrested.
District Attorney Greg Edwards thanked the Family protection Unit of APD, for what he called a professional and expeditious investigation that resulted in the arrests. He said the state will prosecute Evans and Stevenson.
"The evidence indicates that the child suffered chronic abuse over time, and the main point of the case illustrates that we as a society must make sure that young women always understand that the child is more important than any relationship they might have with any man," Edwards said in a live news conference aired on WALB.
Edwards said the man was the abuser, and the mother, a witness to it, allowed the abuse to continue. "For that reason, the state will be prosecuting her fully for her involvement in allowing these activities to go on for the period of time that it did."
"Both defendants will be charged with felony murder, counts of aggravated battery, and cruelty to children," said the D. A.
WALB is told that Janaysia Stevenson suffered beatings so severe that she had internal organ lacerations. Some of those injuries had begun to heal, evidence she had previously been abused.
An autopsy revealed blunt force trauma to the abdomen actually caused the girl's death.
