ALBANY, GA (WALB) -  With more people arming themselves the Albany Police Department is giving citizens a chance to properly handle their weapon.

The department held the latest in a series of Firearms Safety Courses Saturday

The eight hour class is open people 21 years of age and older and teaches them handling skills needed to deploy a handgun for self defense.

"It's a two part class the first part the DA's office explained the law on gun carry, when you can use your weapon when you can't, second part is on the fundamentals of safety and how to shoot," said Deputy Chief Mark Scott, Albany Police Department.

About two dozen people took part in this course. They also headed to the firing range with officers and shot their guns for practice.

To find out about the next Firearms Safety Course contact Phyllis Banks with APD's public relations office.
