ALBANY, GA (WALB) -  A boil water alert was issued in Smithville Friday.

A six inch water main on South Wells Street cracked not once but twice. Crews had to expand the initial hole they dug after the initial section of pipe they replaced cracked further along the pipe creating a bigger section to repair. To complicate matters, the water tower is being repaired and cleaned causing more trouble. Water officials blame Smithville's aging water system for the trouble.

"The Mayor and them are talking about an upgrade and stuff like that on our water system," said Charles Welborn, Smithville Water Department Director.

At the height of the outage nearly half of Smithville was without water. Those with water were urged to boil it for at least two minutes before using it to drink, cook or prepare baby food. A water tank has been set up at city hall for those who need water.
