By Christian Jennings - bio | email

DOUGLAS,  GA (WALB) – Wednesday, January 12th marks the one year anniversary of the devastating Haiti earthquake that killed two Southwest Georgians.

Douglas native Courtney Hayes was one of 14 Lynn University students participating in the "Journey of Hope" service trip when the earthquake struck. Hayes was staying in a hotel in Port-au-Prince when she was killed. David Apperson of Adel was on a business trip in Haiti and was also killed by the powerful quake.

A mass grave was the somber backdrop for a memorial Tuesday marking the anniversary.  It's believed more than 150,000 victims of the quake are buried in the mass grave.

In all, the quake killed more than 230,000 people and left more than a million homeless.
