Triathletes compete for a special cause

ALBANY, GA (WALB) – A South Georgia family had a special reason to hit the trails and get in shape.

Jodi and Khristi Dykes of Lee County ran, swam and biked their way to fitness over the last year.

They began by training for the Georgia Veterans Triathlon on Lake Blackshear.  And they brought a special passenger: their 6-year old son Jacob, who has cerebral palsy.

To make sure he can be with them for the entire race they carry this stroller with them.

They say getting fit has helped them feel better but it's been about more than just dropping a few pounds.

"It's given us more time as a family. It's got us off the couch instead of in front of the TV. Instead of doing individual workouts we work out as a family," said Jodi Dykes.

They even hooked up a small boat to drag behind them during the swimming portion of the race.

Jodi Dykes said they're planning to run another race in Jacksonville just before Thanksgiving.

And if the weather is good, Jacob will be right by their side.
