Week of the Young Child kicks off in Albany

ALBANY, GA (WALB) –Albany's Mayor kicks off the Week of the Young Child.

Flanked by hundreds of children at Albany State University, Mayor Willie Adams proclaimed this the week of the young child in Albany.

It's a program spearheaded by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and the Albany State Early Learning Center, encouraging a better learning relationship between these kids and adults.

Albany Mayor Dr. Willie Adams said  "When these kids hit first grade, they'll hit first grade running. And you won't have to do a lot of remedial work. This to me is one of the keys to improving education in this community."

Albany State athletes and other university groups took the kids on a campus tour.

The university will also host a reading workshop, spaghetti dinner, and art day as part of the week of the young child celebration.

    Community members from the Shadowlawn area met with city leaders to talk about a new sanitary sewer expansion plan.  The expansion plan would extend North on West Gordon Avenue, to South on Shadow-Lawn Drive, then east on West-town Road to the railroad tracks off of West Waddell Avenue.  City leaders said this project is long overdue for the homeowners in this area.
