ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  Relief supplies from around the world are pouring into Haiti, and the shipments will include supplies from the Albany Marine Base.

The Department of Defense has a Humanitarian Assistance program warehouse at MCLB Albany, where tons of extra supplies are kept.

Thursday afternoon, the DOD gave the order for 30 truckloads of those relief supplies to be loaded for shipment to Haiti.

The warehouse at the Albany Marine base is unique, one of only three in the world, and the only one in the United States. It holds excess property the government still deems useful, and includes items like blankets, sleeping bags, water tanks, and humanitarian daily rations.

These contains pouches of fruit pastry, pasta sauce with tomatoes. The warehouse holds about 600,000 meals.

The call came Tuesday night, and Marines began shipping the relief Thursday afternoon.

"We also have cots and sleeping bags, blankets, medical supplies, some medical equipment, and we have clothing if they need it. Both for adults and children. We are poised and ready to go with everything that we have here, and get it into a shipping posture, based on the requirement," said Bill Lane, Humanitarian Director at the base.

Governor Sonny Perdue announced Thursday that the Georgia National Guard is also on standby in case they're needed in Haiti.
