
News release from the GBI
Adel, Georgia, - On Monday, December 14, 2009, at approximately 9:01 p.m., Cook County 911 received a call in reference to a shooting inside the Quick Stop, formerly the Holiday Market, located at 413 S. Hutchinson Ave., in Adel Georgia.
Upon arrival, Adel Police officers discovered two (2) victims with apparent gunshot wounds.
Both victims were transported by ambulance to the hospital. The owner of the store, Dasharatbhai Narayandas Patel, 56 years of age was pronounced dead, and his son, Tapan Patel, 19 years of age, is still in critical condition at this time. The Adel Police Department requested assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation office in Douglas Georgia.
Initial Investigation indicates that an unidentified male, wearing gloves and a ski mask, entered the store with a gun. After a brief encounter with the victims, the suspect then shot both men and then fled the scene. The case, at this time, is being investigated as an attempted armed robbery. No arrest has been made at this time.
An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday at the GBI Crime Lab for the deceased victim.
The investigation is being conducted by the Adel Police Department and the GBI. Officers were also assisted by the Cook County sheriff's Office.
