ALBANY, GA (WALB) –Albany Police were called to 13 domestic violence disturbances Saturday and Sunday. There have been nearly 25 calls so far this month. There were 143 domestic violence calls to Albany Police in November.
Advocates at the Liberty House, a South Georgia battered woman's shelter, say many domestic violence victims will stay in violent homes because it's Christmas time.
Liberty House Executive Director Silke Deeley said "People aren't reaching out during this time of year because they want to be with their families. So even in the worst case scenarios people still want to be with their families. "
Silke Deeley said the high unemployment rate and financial problems will lead to more domestic violence problems during the Holidays in South Georgia.
