ALBANY, GA (WALB) –Small businesses that provide goods and services to local governments may soon get a boost thanks to Albany city leaders.

The Department of Community and Economic Development held a public hearing Monday night on their Small Business Procurement Program.

It was developed based on findings from a disparity study and aims to increase opportunities for small business owners in Albany and Dougherty County.

"The BBC Research and Consulting Firm estimated that $91 million was spent outside of Albany between the years of 2004 and 2007 and what we want to do with this program is keep that money here. We want to re-invest our taxpayer dollars," said Small Business Program Coordinator Jacquelyn Craft.

Members would pay a small fee to be trained and certified as an Albany Small Business Enterprise. Then they'd get 10-percent preference on city contracts over non-local bidders and first access to certain bids. A second public hearing will be held next month.

Albany city commissioners are scheduled to vote on the program in January.
