VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) – In Valdosta, voters in District two will return to the polls to chose a council member.
Downtown business owner Deidra White says her focus is creating jobs. She says economic growth is a natural crime fighter, and she says the city council would benefit from a woman's perspective.
Dr. L. W. Williams, a dentist, is also vying for the seat.
"I have great experience in creating and attracting jobs to district two. 100 total in the past four years," said White.
"I've lived and worked in this community at the same site you see in the background for 40 years. I want to work for you serve you and be here when you need me," Williams said.
Dr. Williams says more sidewalks are needed in the district. He wants to find ways to fight crime and solve traffic problems created when trains block access to the southside of town.
The winner of the runoff will replace City Councilman Willie Head who did not run for re-election.
A seat on the Valdosta Board of Education is on the ballot, too. Christopher Brandon and Debra Bell are running for the Superward East District 7 seat being vacated by Willie Jones. This seat includes districts one, two and four.
Brandon is a center facilitator for the Hudson Dockett Community Center. He hopes to reduce the drop-out rate and get parents more involved with their children.
Opponent Debra Bell says if elected she would make sure people's voices are heard in front of the board.
She is married to Eugene Bell, has three daughters, two grandchildren and works at Valdosta Family Medicine.
"I think the graduation rate needs to be changed and I think the morale of students needs to be a little higher. and I think the morale is down. A lot of times when children's morale is down, they don't do as well."
There are also council races in Cordele, Arlington, and Homerville and a school board race in Seminole County.
