Thanksgiving feeding attracts hundreds

ALBANY, GA (WALB) – An Albany ministry has been feeding hungry people on Thanksgiving Day for years.

After last years event and this year's recession, organizers were expecting quite an even bigger crowd but that wasn't the case.

Last year 1,400 hungry people showed up for a Thanksgiving meal this year only about 700 showed up, but event organizers say regardless of the number. Feeding one hungry mouth makes it worthwhile.

Two years ago Annie King had a life changing experience on thanksgiving.

"I watched a man reach into a garbage bag and take a sandwich out of it and take a bite," said King.

After watching that, she vowed to not let anyone in Albany go hungry again.

Annie is a part of the Heavens Saints Motorcycle ministry and the One heart food pantry helps feed those who are less fortunate.

"To be honest with you I think they are very fortunate they got people that love them and are reaching out to them," said King.

Every Thanksgiving, One Heart along with other organizations and volunteers cook up enough food to feed anyone in need.

And most folks seem to be thankful.

Less people came through the line this year but more volunteers showed up.

This year nearly 300 people volunteered their time.

"If nobody has food you should still give them food if they are poor or rich," said 7-year old volunteer Caroline Petruska.

"Whether its through a chocolate chip cookie, or a glass of tea or even through mashed potatoes and gravy they want to know somebody loves them," said King.

Next Thanksgiving they will be at the same spot again.

Event organizers say they had leftover food this year. They donated some of the cooked food to the Rescue Mission and the uncooked food went back into the pantry for another meal down the road.
