ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Phoebe Putney hospital expects the go-ahead as early as next month to establish a two-year residential campus of the Medical College of Georgia in Albany.
The students would spend their third and fourth years of medical school in Albany. It would give them one on one, hands-on training with doctors. Phoebe administrators say bringing med students to Albany may help keep them here after they begin practicing.
Dr. Doug Patten said, "As they prepare for residency, they've had their clinical experience up to that point here in Southwest Georgia. We believe that creates indelible memories for how good it could be to live here, to practice here and that, of course, helps meet the need for physician manpower in the region."
Initially, the program would start with eight to ten students and grow to 40.
