Animal group wants more awareness

ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  Dougherty County Pet advocates are asking you to help solve the animal overpopulation problem.

Veterinarian Fred Freeland says he is alarmed by the number of pets euthanized at the Humane Society shelter.

He and 'Pack,' a local animal rights group, say pet overpopulation is at the root of most animal suffering. They want to increase spay and neuter programs to decrease euthanizations.

PACK is short for: Promoting Attitudes, Alliances, and Actions Consistent with Kindness for all animals

"But we have to try to reach out and establish programs that pet owners can have spay/neuter performed, or be educated as far as controlling their pets reproduction activity. And I think that's a legitimate government function," said Freeland.

Dr. Freeland says many communities find private and government funded programs to help pay for spay and neutering can save tax payer dollars over euthanization of abandoned animals.

The PACK will hold a meeting on pet overpopulation programs Monday night at 7 at the District One Community Policing Center, across from Porterfield Methodist Church. They are asking you to come get involved, and help end animal suffering.
