Traffic engineers address dangerous intersection

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Traffic engineers made an Albany intersection safer today. A driver crashed into a business at the intersection of 7th Avenue North and Monroe Street. Neighbors blame fencing around a construction site for wrecks and close calls.

"It's a different kind of fence and different place-there's something about that corner," said Leighanna Lashley who lives near the intersection.

A few days ago Lashley heard a car slam into the Albany Floral and Gift Shop after trying to avoid another car at the intersection.

Lashley says even if the wreck didn't stem from the construction fence, it's still a dangerous problem that needs to be fixed.

When I called Traffic and Engineering Manager Randy Casagrand, he checked out the problem right away.

"I got in the car and came out to take a look and there is a sight distance problem concerning the fence," Casagrand said.

Casagrand says about 6,000 cars travel on 7th Ave. everyday and it's a significant amount of traffic to create a problem for drivers.

To make matters better, Casagrand asked the contractor to move the chain-link fence that was near the curb closer to the construction project.

Crews set up a black silt fence at a 45 degree angle that way when people turn the corner on 7th Ave. North and Monroe Street, they can see on-coming traffic a little easier.

The city will also raise a Truck Route sign so it wont block the view of drivers turning right which is important to Lashley and her family who use this road on a daily basis.

The city has a record of seven wrecks at that intersection in the last five years. If there are at least five crashes at an intersection within one year, city engineers will consider safety changes.
