ALBANY, GA (WALB) – A different kind of traffic issue is catching the attention of drivers in Lee County.
Norfolk Southern workers are replacing cross ties on a 36-mile stretch of railroad from Americus to Albany.
It's quite an assembly line, machines roll along the tracks loosening the ties Pulling them out, putting in new ones, and tightening them down. One machine even smoothes out the gravel beside the tracks.
The work can slow traffic and even force detours. At crossings, workers must break up the asphalt and then repaves the crossings after the ties are replaced.
That can force people to use other routes for hours.
The main crossing on State Road 118 in Smithville will be closed on Tuesday December first. The whole project should be finished by the end of the year.
