ALBANY, GA (WALB) – A huge crowd of shoppers were there to greet the re-opening of the Marine Corps Exchange store at the Albany Marine Base.
Hundreds of people were lined up to be among the first to check out the nearly 5 and a half million dollar renovation on the Base Exchange.
Miss Georgia was on hand to help cut the ribbon, and then the shoppers took over.
Retirees and active duty military are eligible to shop tax free in the Base Exchange.
This is just another of many building improvements at the base to improve the quality of life there.
MCCS Head Retail Sales George Mettrick said "We've renovated base housing as you know, The bowling alley is next on the list for the end of the week. In the last two days we've opened the renovated staff NCO club. New barracks are in the process of being established for the base."
This is a picture of the first base exchange store at the Albany Marine Base in 1952. And tax payer funds were not used to renovate the Base Exchange. It's paid for with profits from sales in the exchanges.
