ALBANY, GA (WALB) – On any given night in Albany there are about 200 people without a place to call home. This weekend, you can experience just how it feels to sleep in a cardboard box in the cold.

Hope for the Hungry and homeless sleep out is this Friday night at the Albany Mall. Organizers Todd and LaDonna Urick have become full-time missionaries and combating homelessness is one of their top priorities.

They hope participants will get a better understanding of what the homeless go through each day.  She said, "It's exciting to see that the people in our hometown community are opening their eyes and their hearts to make a different in somebody's life. This is one night where they can give their bed up, sleep in a box to know what homelessness sort of feels like and give back to others in that way."

The sleep out is this Friday night, November 13th, starting at seven. The proceeds will be split between Mission Change, the Foodbank of Southwest Georgia, Habitat for Humanity and the Salvation Army.

One goal of the event is to raise enough money to buy a mobile shower, so the homeless will have a place to shower at least once every week. If you can't bring money, pillows, blankets and hygiene products are needed.
