ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Good news for business and property owners in Dougherty County, your insurance premiums may be going down. The Albany Fire Department has worked to make sure that fire services are available as quickly as possible to all parts of Dougherty County.

That hard work paid off.

Wednesday, The department announced its Insurance Services Office rating has dropped. That moves the city to the top 1% of all fire departments in the country.

The lower rating means fire insurance rates for commercial property could drop up to 3% in the city and residential and commercial properties in the county could drop by as much as 10%.

Chief James Carswell said, "Most people don't realize how we impact their insurance rates. It's something they pay through their escrow account or they write the check for a big expense and they never equate it to what the fire department means to them and so we can show them the money now."

City leaders hope the savings will help attract new industries here.
