ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Do-it-yourself divorces are becoming more common because of the recession.
Leesburg attorney Eddie Meeks says he has fewer divorce clients right now. That trend is being reported across the nation. Lawyers say more couples are bypassing them and filing divorce petitions themselves to save money.
Some couples are staying together because they can't afford to split up.
"And I've seen a lot of people come in here and just basically talk. And they'll say I know I need a divorce, but I just can't afford it right now," said Meeks.
In Dougherty County, 478 divorces were filed between January and November this year. That's down from 511 for the same period in 2008.
