SC bug bomb accident kills 10-month-old

Posted: Updated:

(NBC) - A 10-month-old South Carolina boy is dead and his brother hospitalized after they were apparently overcome by chemicals from a bug fogger.

Police in Anderson County, SC, say the boys’ mother was using foggers inside their single-wide mobile home because of an insect problem.

On Sunday, 25-year-old Elizabeth Whitfield called 911 to report her 10-month-old son was having problems breathing. When emergency crews arrived, they took both boys and their mother to a local hospital.

Ten-month-old Jacob Whitfield was pronounced dead.

The mother was coated in chemicals when she arrived at the hospital.

Investigators found seven fog containers inside the home. Whitfield says she set off three of the foggers about a month ago when she began renting the home.

She continued using them when the insects wouldn’t die.

While pesticides appear to be the cause of death, however confirmation through toxicology reports could take weeks.
