Slow down in construction zones

WORTH CO., GA (WALB) -  Construction cones are a common sign on South Georgia roads. And with the extra construction zones, the chances for accidents also goes up.

Wrecks like the one Wednesday along a construction zone on Highway 300 in Worth County are a reminder of how dangerous driving in construction zones can be.

Police say that they often see people simply ignore the posted lower speed limits in construction zones. And even when they do slow down, many drivers make another mistake by following too closely.

And it's not just the other drivers that motorists need to look out for.

"They need to look for trucks or other vehicles that are actually working there entering the roadways or getting near the roadways. Different pieces of equipment near the roadway and the workers around them," said Albany Police Cpl. Jon Segroves.

And Corporal Segroves wants to remind people that you can get a ticket for going even one mile per hour over the speed limit in a construction zone, and that the speeding fines are doubled.
