TIFTON, GA (WALB) - Shaw Industries in Tifton announced it will downsize its Tifton Plant by approximately 35 percent by the next four weeks.
The plant in Tifton is a spun yarn facility, and the decision was made because of the downturn in the housing industry.
The company closed one of its Tifton plants in 2008 and 228 people lost their jobs then.
The Chamber of commerce president says they have been working closely with Shaw for the last year because several plants around the southeast have closed.
"You've got a few with a negative attitude, and a few with a positive attitude," said Sammy Head, a Mechanic with Shaw Industries. "A lot of them saying its not the end of the world, looking forward to going to school, a lot worried about tomorrow. I said 'don't worry about tomorrow,' I said 'let tomorrow worry about itself.'"
"We're deeply concerned with the families and our thoughts and prayers are with them," said Brad Day of the Tifton Chamber of Commerce. "But we have to develop an aggressive strategy to help folks find work and get over this hurdle as quickly as possible."
Shaw is partnering with the Georgia Department of Labor 'S Rapid Response team to provide on site one on one sessions to council employees and provide out placement and training.
The Chamber plans to meet Friday with the first focus Crisis Team, composed to various state and local representatives.
