Press Release from the Georgia Department of Transportation
The Georgia Department of Transportation is nearing completion of the "Southwest Georgia Interstate Study" to identify roadway capacity and operational needs to improve Southwest Georgia's access to I-185, I-75 & I-10.
The study includes Baker, Brooks, Calhoun, Chattahoochee, Clay, Colquitt, Cook, Crisp, Decatur, Dooly, Dougherty, Early, Grady, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Marion, Miller, Mitchell, Muscogee, Quitman, Randolph, Schley, Seminole, Stewart, Sumter, Terrell, Thomas, Tift, Turner, Webster, and Worth Counties.
To date, the Study Team has collected and analyzed existing traffic and land use data; evaluated future growth trends; developed a "regional travel model" that predicts future travel volumes and needs; evaluated 4 hypothetical new interstate scenarios; and identified potential improvements related to capacity, operations, corridors, intersections, safety, speed, and signalization.
The third and final round of the Study's public meetings has been scheduled and will present the Study's final recommendations. Each meeting will start with a presentation of the study's summary of findings, including locations where there may be viable investments and details on how they could improve the overall transportation system.
After that, an informal open-house style meeting will also provide citizens with a chance to get detailed information and speak with GDOT representatives.
"The work completed to date has considered a number of factors to help guide appropriate transportation investments," said Todd Long, Director of Planning. "We encourage the public to take this opportunity to learn more about the recommendations, ask questions, and provide their feedback."
The public is invited and encouraged to attend the most convenient meeting as each meeting will cover the same information. All meetings will begin promptly at 5:00 pm.
