ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Good news tonight on the home front. Home sales rose more than 9 % in September-the largest monthly increase in 26 years.

Realtors say it's mostly due to the new $8,000 tax credit under the federal stimulus plan. Nationwide sales are up nearly 24% from their bottom in January.

One realtor says Albany's home sales have been down over the past year, but she's seen more interest lately from people looking to qualify for the tax credit before it's too late.

"Part of the reason is Albany didn't get hit the way some of the national markets got hit with the prices and foreclosures,"said realtor Jackie Dixon with 1 Key Realty. "We've just been more stable and we're not having the big highs or the big lows."

Dixon also says its important for people to be under contract as a buyer now if they want to qualify for the new home buyer's credit by November 30th. Congress is considering to extend the tax credit through June 30th but hasn't made a decision yet.
