ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Despite the state's budget woes, the Georgia Office of Highway Safety renewed the Safe Communities Grant in Dougherty County for another year.
The $46,000 grant will keep Safe Communities working with traffic engineering and law enforcement to promote road safety and prevent crashes.
In the last nine years, Safe Communities has helped improve seat belt usage to more than 92 percent, one of the best in the nation, and in 2008 saw traffic crashes decrease by four percent.
"We saw seven of our top ten crash locations drop off of the list after we made some low cost safety improvements at those intersections," said Safe Communities Coordinator Michele DeMott.
Another project for Safe Communities this year is working with neighborhoods to reduce cut through traffic down residential streets.
