GARDEN CITY, GA (WTOC) - A woman who was killed Thursday morning by a train in Garden City apparently committed suicide, according to police.

The accident happened around 3:15am on the tracks near Chatham Villa Drive and Augusta Road.

Garden City police say the 24-year-old woman, who has not yet been identified, was killed instantly by the train.

Police found a sleeping bag nearby and say it appears the woman laid across the tracks to wait for train in an apparent suicide.

After further investigation, police say they discovered the woman got on an Amtrak train in Sarasota, Florida and got off in Savannah.

Police say she then walked more than a mile down the track to Garden City where she was later killed by a train.

According to police, the woman left a note with her roommate in Sarasota telling her goodbye.

Police say there was no note on her body and don't know if the Savannah area was her intended destination or if the suicide was planned.
