DAWSON, GA (WALB) - Wednesday, they signed an agreement to lease the county the adult probation detention center building that closed six months ago. Terrell County was competing with several other counties to get the facility.
Commissioner aren't sure yet whether they'll move the Terrell County Correctional Institution to the larger 200 bed facility or use it to house state prisoners. Either way, they say it will create jobs.
"It is a job producer and really it would be a real benefit," said Terrell County Commission Chairman Walter T. Gamble Jr. "It's a six million dollar plus building, facilities, the county's already invested money in the land that it gave the state in earlier days, it's a real asset for Terrell County."
"Being from a small location, I realize the economic impact that losing 50, 60 jobs can have so its very important for us to protect our small communities as well as the large communities," said Georgia Dept. of Corrections Commissioner Brian Owens.
Department of Corrections Commissioner Brian Owens says it's more economical for the state to run facilities with inmate populations around two thousand, than small facilities they closed earlier this year.
