UK's "Sex Week" raises eyebrows, concerns

Posted: Updated:

(NBC) - The University of Kentucky's "Sex Week" is raising eyebrows on and off campus.

Organizers say "Sex Week" activities were designed to improve students understanding of intimacy and "sexual literacy," but some of the activities and the week's main sponsor are drawing criticism.

Most of the funding was provided by Pure Romance, an Ohio based company that specializes in hosting sex product and education parties in private homes.

That's raised the ire of the Family Foundation of Kentucky.

"Those folks have gone crazy," says foundation director Kent Ostrander.  "To introduce and make this a huge standard of the fall semester, rather than higher education, we're talking about lower education."

Ostrander believes that some of the products sold on Pure Romance's website, namely whips and fur-lined handcuffs, promote violence against women.

"All of us need to learn about sex," he says.  "And there are better ways to learn about it and there are bad ways to learn about it."

Student and faculty organizers say all of the week's activities are designed to promote a healthy discussion about sex.

"This isn't about violence, in fact some of our events are to help support women in the fight against violence," says student coordinator Barrett Gargala.
