NEWTON, GA (WALB) - A memory garden to memorialize two Baker County children killed by a tornado is growing, thanks to community support.
It started out as a garden to help students heal and remember 9-year-old Kierra Crumbley and 13-year-old Kursty Thomas who were killed March first 2007. Now the garden has grown into a tool used to teach children about science and nature.
The garden has become a community effort with donations from Home Depot and Walmart and help from 4-H students who helped pull weeds for Hands on Georgia week.
School officials hope to keep it growing.
"We're teaching them the importance of working together, the importance of doing things for others and hopefully they're learning about plants and how to care for them since they are 4-H'ers," said Baker County Cooperative Extension Service Carrie Hall.
"We hope to have a covered pavilion with sources so we can do experiments, we can come out take some of the plants and maybe dissect, check them see how they're growing," said 3rd Grade Teacher Janice Tipper.
Principal Danny Lovering said the garden also helps students by building character and teaching them responsibility. Students in grades first through third are responsible for maintaining the garden.
