CLIMAX,  GA (WALB) -  Deputies found 13 marijuana plants, and found an area where more had been growing for several months. They spent the day searching the suspect's home, a nearby abandoned house, and even the woods looking for evidence.

It only took a few sunny days, a little Georgia soil, and miracle grow to create quite the profitable operation for 45-year-old Phillip Byrd.

"We responded out here to a complaint from a concerned citizen about marijuana growing in an abandoned house," said Capt. Chip Nix of the Decatur Co. Sheriff's Office.

"We actually found marijuana hanging up to dry it had already been harvested. we came out and made contact with the suspects, we have one of them in custody now he confessed and actually showed us where he had grown several marijuana plants."

Byrd directed investigators to a wooded area across the street from his Climax home at 175 Kemp Road.

It only took a couple minutes of walking to find stalk after stalk, pots, and fertilizer.

They found 13 plants hanging to dry in the abandoned house, and 21 stalks in the woods, which means some of the plants have already been distributed

"It's a substantial amount to be grown in this area. Now-a-days everything is moved inside, not seeing as many outdoor grows so this is a good hit for this county," said Nix.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for Byrd's residence and found more evidence-- stems, a little marijuana, even a couple of guns.

Byrd is in jail charged with manufacturing marijuana and possession of a firearm of a convicted felon.

This was the third drug bust at that same home. Phillip Byrd's brother was arrested in 2004 when several pounds of marijuana were seized there. The brother was also charged in 2006 when a smaller amount of pot was found there.
