THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) - Cleanup is underway in Thomas County after 700 gallons of a toxic chemical spilled Sunday morning along a stretch of Summerhill Road.
According to officials, a truck was hauling containers of PCB or Polychlorinated Biphenyls on a trailer when the spillage occurred around 9:30 a.m. Emergency officials say the spill began on Summerhill Road in the county and stretched over 4 miles into Thomasville city limits.
EPD crews are expected to arrive Monday to test air and soil quality and begin cleanup measures. No roads have been closed and no evacuations have been ordered.
PCBs were widely used as a fire retardant and insulator in the manufacture of transformers and capacitors.
