UNADILLA, GA (WALB) - Heavy downpours in Dooly County created quite a mess in Unadilla.
Nearly five inches of rainfall fell in the area early Tuesday morning causing flash flooding which prompted evacuations and washed out part of a highway.
Fast rising waters from a holding pond washed out part of state Highway 230 leaving a huge hole and forcing detours. Deputies shut down the part of the highway until DOT crews can make repairs.
Around 1:00 a.m., nearly a dozen homes had to be evacuated on Cosby and Oak Streets in Unadilla due to the threat of flash flooding. Runoff water from nearby Interstate 75 poured into neighborhoods and briefly threatened homes.
Fortunately the water subsided causing no major damage and residents were allowed to go back to their homes.
In Houston County, just north of Dooly, flash flooding shut down part of Interstate 75 for nearly three hours early Tuesday morning.
