BLAKELY, GA (WALB) - A fight over a man ended with gunfire at a Blakely housing project Wednesday morning. Police say one woman was hitting another with a gun when it went off just after eight this morning.
24-year old Rachelel Graham was shot in the head, and is now in critical condition, and the other woman is in jail.
It was a fight that nearly cost a woman her life. And neighbors who witnessed it say it was scary and senseless.
Early county investigators searched a Black Durango for evidence this morning only a few hours after they say 23-year-old Mary Lee Barber shot 24-year-old Rachelle Graham in the head.
"I heard the gunshot and I thought somebody shot a squirrel. I ran over there because I know the girl that got shot, I know her good," said Willie Jones.
"There was a fight this morning which led to a fight close to where Ms. Barber lives," said Lt. Donald Skipper of the Early Co. Sheriff's Office.
Investigators say Graham tried to run Barber off the road when she was taking her kids to school. After that incident, they planned to meet here on Howell street near Willis Cain Homes to "settle" their differences.
Neighbors say Barber was beating Graham over the head with her pistol, when it went went off.
"I went over there and I got in the truck and told her to hold on, hold on Rae Rae," said Earlene Lindsey. "But blood just kept coming out her mouth."
Graham went through surgery and is in serious condition in an Alabama hospital. Barber was arrested at the scene, charged with aggravated assault.
"I love the both of them and I didn't know all this was going on between them," said Lindsey.
Friends say the fight was over a man they both dated at one time.
"Especially over a man-- there's too many out there. I just don't understand, I don't understand," said Lindsey.
Friends of the two women say Barber didn't mean to fire the gun, that it accidentally went off. But investigators aren't ruling out the possibility that the shooting was intentional. Additional charges are expected to be filed against Mary Lee Barber.
